The Man Behind the Fake Messages

The man identified by federal authorities is Derrick Callella, 42, of Hawthorne, California.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Callella contacted members of Nancy Guthrie’s family on February 4 and asked about a bitcoin transfer. Prosecutors said he knew an earlier ransom demand had already been made and acknowledged that his conduct was intended to harass the family and obtain information about the investigation.

Nancy’s children had recently released a public appeal asking for their mother’s safe return. Callella’s message came shortly afterward, taking advantage of information that was already circulating publicly.

Federal investigators said Callella attempted to conceal the phone number used to send the message. Despite that effort, investigators traced the communication to an IP address associated with his California home. He was arrested on February 5.
