PART 1: ONE MINUTE BEFORE TWO
At exactly 1:59 p.m., I was sprawled across the remains of what had once been my baby shower. One arm shielded my eight-month-pregnant stomach while my husband, Julian Vance, towered over me with his much younger mistress at his side. Silver balloons hung in torn pieces, cupcakes were crushed across the marble floor, and fifty guests stood frozen, watching in complete silence.
Julian had shoved me after I challenged him for bringing Chloe into our home and allowing his mother to introduce her as the woman who would give the family “the heir it deserved.” His billionaire father, Arthur Vance, declared that I was unstable. His mother, Beatrice, looked on with obvious satisfaction. Then Julian stared down at me as though our six years of marriage had never existed.
“You embarrassed me.”
Chloe gently rested a hand on her stomach and smiled.
“She shouldn’t have raised her voice, Jules.”
Arthur stepped closer.
“That’s enough, Clara. You were always too emotional for this family.”
Julian’s face hardened.
“Chloe is carrying the real heir.”
I should have broken down in tears. Instead, I smiled. That smile unsettled him far more than anger ever could because Julian had spent years confusing my silence with weakness. What he didn’t know was that I had spent the last fourteen months copying his father’s confidential ledgers, tracking shell corporations, and secretly forwarding the evidence to federal investigators. He also had no idea that the diamond brooch pinned to Beatrice’s dress concealed a hidden camera with a live audio feed. Most importantly, he had no clue that the federal raid on the Vance estate was set to begin at precisely 2:00 p.m. I glanced at my cracked watch. Only one minute remained.
“Julian, you should have paid closer attention to the woman you married.”
He lowered himself beside me.
“What did you just say?”
“I said you made a mistake.”
“The only mistake I ever made was marrying you.”
Chloe laughed, and with that sound, every last trace of affection I had ever felt for Julian disappeared. For six years, I had stood beside him at charity galas, accepted his endless absences, endured constant insults from his parents, and pretended not to notice the suspicious dealings surrounding their businesses. I did it because I needed time. Behind their polished reputation, their companies concealed bribes, fraudulent contracts, offshore accounts, and fake charitable organizations. They assumed I understood nothing because I stayed quiet during business dinners. In truth, I remembered every figure, every name, and every careless admission they ever made.
A police siren echoed from outside. Arthur immediately turned toward the windows, and for the first time, fear crossed his face. Julian, however, continued putting on a performance for the guests.
“My wife attacked an innocent pregnant woman because she was jealous.”
Even through the pain, I laughed.
“You rehearsed that speech, but you forgot about the cameras.”
Beatrice instinctively touched the pearls around her neck.
“The house security cameras were turned off.”
“I’m not talking about the house cameras.”
My eyes settled on the diamond brooch fastened to her dress.
“I’m talking about that.”
