PART 2

Daniel cautiously stepped onto the porch.

“What is that?”

Ryan crossed his arms.

“You tell us.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I don’t understand.”

“You will,” I said.

He knelt beside the box.

There was no return address.

Only his name.

He opened it.

Inside were several folders, old photographs, bank statements, and copies of legal papers.

Daniel lifted the first folder.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then stopped.

“What the hell?”

Evelyn suddenly came up behind him.

“What’s going on?”

Daniel turned toward her.

“Mom, did you know about this?”

She went completely still.

That was the first thing that scared me.

Not the documents.

Not the box.

Her reaction.

She immediately reached to shut the lid.

“Daniel, put that away.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“No.”

Evelyn shot him an angry look.

“This is a family matter.”

Ryan pointed at me.

“You put your new wife outside in freezing weather. You don’t get to call this private anymore.”

Daniel opened another folder.

The color drained from his face.

There were papers connected to the house.

The mortgage.

The property records.

And an older agreement proving that Evelyn had not been the only person responsible for purchasing the home.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You told me Grandma gave you this house.”

Evelyn remained silent.

Daniel’s voice became louder.

“You said you bought it yourself.”

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

She finally shouted.

“From your father!”

Silence.

I looked over at Ryan.

Neither of us had seen that coming.

Evelyn confessed that years earlier, the house had been transferred into a family trust after a difficult divorce.

Daniel’s father had retained an interest.

But there was more.

The box contained letters and other correspondence showing that Evelyn had been pressuring Daniel to keep the house under her control.

She had convinced him that marrying me would put her security at risk.

And Daniel had believed her.

Then I noticed one document near the bottom.

It wasn’t related to the house.

It was about me.

My name appeared on a legal agreement.

I stared at Daniel.

“Why is my name on that?”

He had no answer.

Evelyn suddenly reached for the document.

Ryan stopped her.

Daniel read it.

His entire expression changed.

“You knew about this before our wedding?”

Evelyn looked away.

And that was when I understood that the freezing night wasn’t the real betrayal.

Someone had set something in motion long before I ever walked down the aisle.

Daniel stared at me in horror.

“I swear, I didn’t know.”

I stepped back.

“Then find out.”

Because the final document in that box contained a signature that could change everything.
