Rachel’s message came one evening: “Please don’t contact me.” I was confused because she had shared dinner with my widowed father just the night before. When I went to her apartment, she eventually showed me an anonymous message telling her to keep her distance from him. The sender had also attached a photograph of Rachel leaving the restaurant and revealed private information about her family.
That was when I started wondering whether the six women who had suddenly stopped communicating with my father after their dates had truly walked away by choice.
My father had been widowed twelve years earlier and had stayed away from relationships for most of that time. When he finally joined a dating site, he started meeting several kind and interesting women.
Yet after every promising date, each woman unexpectedly blocked him or disappeared without giving him an explanation. After it happened for the sixth time, he began to believe he was the problem and started pulling away from dating once again.
I asked Rachel to meet with him because I wanted her honest perspective on whether he had unknowingly done something that made these women uncomfortable.
She explained that he had been polite, considerate, and pleasant to talk to, which made what happened to her afterward even more disturbing.
When we showed my father the messages, he was shocked and recommended that we contact the police. There was nothing suspicious on his phone, but his home-security recordings captured someone entering his driveway soon after Rachel’s date. The person’s face was concealed, although the shoes appeared familiar. An old family photograph then led us to believe the person was my mother’s younger sister, Sabrina. Rachel also remembered that Sabrina had access to private details about her family.
When we confronted Sabrina, she admitted that she had been watching the women my father dated and anonymously contacting them because she believed she was protecting my mother’s memory.
Sabrina had tracked the women, searched for information about them online, and sent messages containing personal details designed to make them stop communicating with my father.
Rachel saved the messages and photographs and reported what had happened, while my father handed over the security footage. Sabrina eventually took responsibility and agreed to counseling as part of the legal process.
My father initially believed that trying to date again had somehow caused everything, but I reminded him that another person’s choices and actions were not his fault.
Several months later, he began seeing a woman named Jocelyn. Their relationship progressed slowly, and before long, laughter had returned to his home.
For the first time in many years, he was finally starting to move ahead with his life while continuing to cherish the memory of my mother.
