Is Donald Trump Wearing a Catheter? What We Know About the Claims Surrounding His Health

Donald Trump’s health has remained a subject of public discussion throughout his political career, particularly because of his age and his repeated criticism of the health of political opponents. Since returning to the White House for a second term, questions about the president’s physical condition have once again attracted attention online.

The latest speculation began after photographs of Trump attending a UFC event circulated widely on social media. In one of the images, fighter Kayla Harrison can be seen placing her championship belt around Trump’s waist. Some social-media users claimed that a visible line underneath Trump’s trousers could indicate that he was wearing a urinary catheter.

However, there is no reliable public evidence establishing that Trump was wearing a catheter in the photograph. A line or crease visible through clothing is not enough to determine what medical equipment, if any, a person may be using.

Trump’s Health Has Been Closely Watched

Questions about presidential health are not unusual, especially when a president is older. Trump began his second term at an age that made him the oldest person to assume the presidency for a second term.

During the 2024 presidential campaign, health and cognitive ability became major political issues. Trump repeatedly questioned Joe Biden’s age and fitness for office, while his campaign opponents raised their own questions about Trump’s health and transparency.

Unlike some candidates who voluntarily release extensive medical documentation, Trump has faced criticism over the amount and timing of the medical information made public during his campaigns.

Nevertheless, the White House has repeatedly maintained that the president is capable of carrying out his duties.

What Did Trump’s Latest Medical Examination Say?

In April, White House physician Dr. Sean Barbabella released a medical report following Trump’s examination.

According to the report, Trump was listed as 75 inches tall and weighing 224 pounds. The examination reportedly included evaluations of his eyes, ears, neck, throat and heart.

The physician described Trump as being in strong overall physical condition and stated that he demonstrated good cardiovascular, pulmonary and neurological function.

The report also noted that Trump had previously undergone cataract surgery on both eyes.

His medication list reportedly included treatment related to cholesterol, a cardiovascular preventive medication and a topical medication for a skin condition.

The report therefore presented a generally positive picture of the president’s health.

What About His Colonoscopy?

Trump also underwent a colonoscopy in 2024.

According to information released by his physician, the procedure identified a benign polyp as well as diverticulitis, a condition involving inflammation or changes in small pouches that can develop in the colon.

A follow-up colonoscopy was recommended for a later date.

Importantly, these findings do not by themselves establish that Trump has a condition that would require a urinary catheter.

How Did the Catheter Rumor Begin?

The latest controversy originated from photographs taken at a UFC event.

In one widely circulated image, a visible line appears to run down part of Trump’s trousers. Some users interpreted the shape as tubing and claimed that it could be connected to a Foley catheter.

Posts making the claim spread across platforms including X, Facebook and TikTok.

Some posts went considerably further, attempting to connect the supposed catheter with other alleged symptoms and suggesting that Trump might have a neurological illness.

Those claims, however, are speculative. A photograph cannot reliably establish whether a person has a neurological disorder, is receiving infusion treatment or is using a urinary catheter.

What Is a Foley Catheter?

A Foley catheter is a medical device used to drain urine from the bladder.

It consists of a flexible tube inserted into the bladder and connected to a collection system. Doctors may use one when a patient is temporarily unable to urinate normally, including in certain situations following surgery or because of specific medical conditions.

A Foley catheter is different from many other medical devices that may be worn or carried by patients, and its presence generally cannot be confirmed simply by looking at someone’s trousers from a distance.

Has the White House Confirmed a Catheter?

No.

The White House rejected the social-media speculation when questioned about it.

Spokesperson Steven Cheung described the claim as false and pointed toward Trump’s recently released medical report, which characterized the president as being in good physical and cognitive condition.

The response also criticized social-media users and media outlets for spreading what the administration considers unfounded claims about Trump’s health.

Can the Photograph Prove Anything?

This is perhaps the most important point.

A photograph may show something unusual or raise questions, but it cannot by itself provide a medical diagnosis.

A visible line underneath clothing could potentially have many explanations. It could be a fold or crease in the clothing, an object in a pocket, part of the clothing itself, or something else that cannot be identified from the photograph.

Without medical documentation, a direct statement from the individual or reliable reporting based on credible evidence, it would be inappropriate to state that Trump was wearing a catheter as a fact.

The same applies to claims that the photograph proves a neurological disorder or another serious medical condition.

Why Presidential Health Matters

The health of a sitting president is a legitimate public-interest issue because the president has enormous constitutional responsibilities and serves as Commander-in-Chief.

For that reason, medical examinations and physicians’ reports can provide useful information to the public.

At the same time, public discussion should distinguish between documented medical information and speculation based on photographs or social-media posts.

Trump’s publicly released medical evaluation described him as physically and cognitively fit to perform the duties of the presidency. The catheter allegation, by contrast, has not been established by credible medical evidence.

The Bottom Line

The photograph from the UFC event has generated significant discussion online, with some social-media users claiming that a visible line beneath Donald Trump’s trousers is evidence that he was wearing a Foley catheter.

However, there is no reliable evidence from the photograph alone that confirms this claim.

The White House has denied the allegation, while Trump’s publicly released medical report described him as being in strong overall physical and cognitive condition.

Until credible medical documentation or independently verified evidence says otherwise, the claim that Donald Trump was wearing a catheter should be treated as unsubstantiated social-media speculation rather than an established fact.

As with any discussion involving a public figure’s health, it is important to separate verified medical information from assumptions based on photographs, online comments and political speculation.
