By the time the first ransom message arrived, Nancy had already disappeared from her quiet Tucson routine. The email came approximately one day after she was abducted.

The message claimed that Nancy was “safe but scared.” Those few words carried a strange combination of hope and fear. For a family desperately searching for proof that she was still alive, they may have felt like the smallest possible sign of reassurance.

But the rest of the message was far from comforting.

The sender demanded $4 million in Bitcoin and claimed that Nancy’s return would be arranged if the payment was made by 5 p.m. on February 5, 2026. The message then added another threat: if the ransom was not paid within four days, the demand would increase to $6 million.

It was a message designed to create panic and urgency. There was no room for negotiation and no clear way to know whether the person behind it was telling the truth.

Then came the final words that made the message even more disturbing:

“Or else.”

A Second Message Changed Everything

The first message created a countdown. The second one changed the entire atmosphere surrounding the case.

On February 6, another email arrived from the same IP address as the first message. That detail immediately caught investigators’ attention because it suggested a possible connection between the two communications.

However, the tone of the second message was very different.

It reportedly began with what investigators described as a confusing and lengthy “apology.” But the apology was not for Nancy’s disappearance. Instead, it was allegedly an apology for her “inadvertent death.”

Those words changed the direction of the investigation. Until that point, the public understanding of the case centered around a kidnapping: a missing elderly woman, a ransom demand, and a family waiting desperately for proof that she was alive.

The second message introduced a much darker possibility.

Investigators Later Questioned the Messages

According to reports, federal investigators later determined that the kidnapping-related messages were not genuine. This reportedly included the first two ransom messages and a third message from someone claiming to know who was responsible for Nancy’s disappearance.

An FBI official, speaking anonymously because the investigation remained active, said that none of the ransom notes were believed to be authentic.

The reported conclusion changed how the public viewed the case. The messages that once appeared to provide clues about a kidnapping now seemed to be a separate mystery — communications allegedly created by someone who was not actually involved in Nancy’s disappearance.
